Hi,
Is it possible to recieve an email when any important anouncements are made.
The Dompdf file problem is a prime example.

A mailing list is a very good idea and I don't think I have seen one anywhere on the site.

I second (or third?) the idea of a mailing list. It's essential for people who don't check the forums regularly when announcing new security/important fixes.

I attempted to send a mass email via the admin section about this. The server timed out after about 3 mins

Or how about a feed in the Opencart admin area, as suggested by peteVA.

The version notice, user alert, whatever it turns out to be does not have to be overwhelming. Some carts just have a line saying "Latest version is xx.xx.xx, you are running xx.xx.yy. My 3 year old CubeCart just has a little red box up near the top that says Updates Available.
.......
Something you could turn off when you have read it - with a 'whitelabel' developer version, which could just say 'Alert, please contact your developer XYZ for an important update'.

Otherwise...maybe an opt-in newsletter thing would work, just for bulletins.
Regardless, I do think an off-forum alert an extremely good idea.
