Missing text in French Search box

Is it a single or multistore setup? Single
Hello,
We are having a hard time time figuring out where to modify the default text in the search box on the homepage.
For example;
Files in public_html>catalog>language>fr-Fr>checkout or >common or >product all state $_['text_search'] ='Chercher'; but the search text box is blank on the French side and on the English side it says "Search" in the text field.
Any advice or help in the matter is greatly appreciated!
