Depending on the server capacity, editing catalog files can be quite limited especially due to a mass size of results you may need to reflect periodically. Editing files for small results may still have its advantage but I'd rather recommend using web services / remote APIs or by creating a virtual server to work on your files to gather the data that you need electronically rather than pulling the whole list of data from CSV to your browser and landing on a disaster and recovery process upon failing to update the blanks with the prices.
On the other side of the coin, if you do use a decent web hosting package service, with a decent mounted server, CSV files are still considerable options to use.
