For me it is 1. I agree it looks a bit harsh for the eyes at first but I am used working in darker interfaces like the products of adobe and subline and think many webmasters would like it dark.
Take wordpress for example the #1 leading cms that customers love and use every time even when not aplicable..( off topic ) anyway, They offer the dark sidebar too and something more important, the option to custom colorize admin panel .
Can't we have the same option in OpenCart too? So everyone is happy?
P.S. I had a client recently switching to OC 2.0.3.1 and said "WOW it looks like wordpress" such an analogy...
