The fact that the viewed field is part of the product table and as such, the product table is updated on every product view ensures that there is no Mysql query caching possible for select queries on the product table.

That field should be put in a separate product_viewed table.

Well, I don't recall, to have seen a VIEWED Field ever on a Product
Page, except, if one added some Extension, enabling such ... ???

it is in there mainly for reporting in admin, not for showing front-end.
