When applying a discount to a product, although the only group selected is the 'Default' group (the only group currently in our installation) even guest customers are able to view the discount price.
The expected behaviour is that only the selected customer group can view, and obtain the discounted pricing. It is expected that 'Guest Customers' will not see or obtain the discount.

A similar issue is also experienced when using the product 'Special' option.

The word "default" means that no customer group has been specified.
So the expected behaviour is that you define your customer groups other than default.

The word "default" means that no customer group has been specified.
So the expected behaviour is that you define your customer groups other than default.
So should this reference be made consistent across opencart?
New customers are added to the 'Default' group, in customer groups there is a 'Default' group and in the product discount and specials tabs the first column is titled 'Customer Groups', with 'Default' selected.
Therefore for clarity and UX would it not be better to have the displayed 'default' option titled 'All' or 'Everyone'? Instead of 'Default' which gives the impression the 'Default' group will be the customer group included?

The Opencart documentation also states:
The Discount Tab needs the following information to include a discount for a product:

Customer Group: A group of customers (made in Sales > Customers > Groups) that meet a criteria to use this discount.
Any admin user will see a 'Default' group already exists in the specified location (Sales > Customers > Groups), and earlier installation examples make reference to adding customers to the 'Default' group? This is certainly the case in the documentation for (System>Setting>Option>Account) - http://docs.opencart.com/en-gb/system/setting/option/

So why would creating an additional / alternative group to 'Default' for discounts and specials be the expected behaviour, when this i behaviour configuration is not detailed elsewhere in the documentation?

again, default means that no specific group has been specified, i.e. that applies for all customers for which no specific group has been assigned which includes guests. if you want to treat customers differently you have to assign them to a specific group, i.e. not the default.

I'm not contesting your response that:
"again, default means that no specific group has been specified, i.e. that applies for all customers for which no specific group has been assigned which includes guests. if you want to treat customers differently you have to assign them to a specific group, i.e. not the default."

But you are simply choosing to ignore my previous response and the references to the documentation. My assertion is that current behaviour is not supported by application of the information contained within the documentation. This in turn is a demonstrable inconsistency within the documentation and the UI text supports this inconsistency by its wording.

Well, you're probably just expecting too much out of an Opencart

Well to be honest this is a user forum where people like Ernie, letxobnav etc try to help people to make their store run smooth without any return on their time. It is simply we are all sharing our knowledge and time as much as we can.  If you have issues with documentation I would suggest you write to opencart premium support here: dedicatedsupport@opencart.com and ask them for providing such poor/low quality docs.  ;)
