Restore backups to the previous state. Then, re-integrate the bug-fix solution.

If you're not getting to an answer here, you could pay a developer such as ourselves or post a job in the Commercial Support Forum.

I will try to re-integrate it later on and see what happens (I'd prefer not to do it right now to avoid potential crashes).
Thank you for the ideas and your time!

If a restoration point is not a suitable solution for you at this time, you could always create a new service request in the Commercial Support section of the forum, or contact a reliable Opencart partner by using the Resources link at the top of the site, or contact me directly via PM to get this issue investigated as a custom job.

I found a solution for this issue. I hadn't imagined that this particular extension ( Live Ajax Search FREE ) can be the underlying problem.
When I disabled it the problem disappeared, so I dug in and found that it uses two manufacturer-related variables in one of its files.
Apparently they were causing the product template (the if statement) to be under the impression that there is an assigned manufacturer despite there being none and this

My guess is that somehow the 'if statement' still thinks that a manufacturer has been assigned to the product.
turned out to be right.

I renamed them and got rid of the problem. I wrote to the developers anyway so they can apply a proper fix.
