Not sure, what you mean, but THERE IS a sort of thank you message, after you submit the contact form. Also zip code is the same as post code, so just rename it.

I get no message response, it just completes and sends and returns the title of the contact page

It's in the core OpenCart file, but if it doesn't work, then probably you have something broken out there. So looking into the core file won't actually help.
