From what ive seen the changes are minimal and you can just overwrite the opencart files in the directory, there are no database changes.
Give it a try and remember to backup your old site before trying

I didn't had much troubles, because it wasn't a big update and there was no changes in the database.
1.) make backups !!!
2.) keep the old files on your server (just rename the directory). You will need this to check the rights (read / write / execute)
3.) upload the files except the install directory and the config files ( in admin and catalog, where the database connection is saved)
4.) This was the only error "imagepng.... " in the admin section at the products
solution: delete the files (only files no directory e.g. no_images...) in the directory images/cache/ and check the rights (should 755). You can check it with your old files on the server.
That was it. I was more worried regarding the server update to Php 7.2. (but it seems with the new update 3.0.3.2, there is no error anymore)
