How to move image folder outside

I am a pretty user of opencart, and really like it. However, I tried several ways, but still cannot make it work. The problem is following:

1. my website is under /var/www/public, but I want to move image outside of public, and make it as /var/www/data/image. And I clean the cache, but images on website just broken because all images are going to
ourdomain.com/image, which is actually still looking for files under /var/www/public.

2. I found there was a param: HTTP_IMAGE in old version, but it is not in latest version I just downloaded.

Actually, moving these data file outside of the source code is one important requirement for most eCommerce host.

Just post here to see if it is possible to make it work:
1. move images outside of source code directory
2. serve images in a subdomain or different domain.
