Gaps in Latest module

When I change the layout of the "latest" module from col-md-4 to col-md-3, it adds gaps where products should be.
I thought it might be disabled products, but I deleted them and double checked the DB to make sure they were deleted and they were.

any ideas what could be causing this and/or how to fix it?
